Abans Opens Two Smart Classrooms in Kuliyapitiya to Provide Every Sri Lankan Child a High-quality Education

As a further step towards their goal of providing each Sri Lankan child a better education, Abans recently launched two new smart classrooms in the Kurunegala District. Both were formally opened by Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Minister of Education, at Central College Kuliyapitiya and Saranath College Kuliyapitiya on the 13th and 18th of July respectively. The Senior Management of Abans and dignitaries from the Ministry of Education were also present at the two events.

Following on the heels of the recent flagship smart classroom launch at Vishaka Girls’ High School, Badulla, the introduction of these classrooms represent the next stage in the Abans Smart Classroom Initiative. Developed with the support of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure (MTDI), this initiative embodies Abans’ commitment towards uplifting the current academic standards in Sri Lanka’s public education system. The project has already received immense critical acclaim amongst the educators and business leaders who have noted the positive role that the Smart Classrooms can play in improving the Sri Lankan economy.

The Abans Smart Classroom provides both teachers and students the opportunity to engage in different academic techniques, other than rote memorization. Addressing the divergent needs, abilities and learning styles expressed by the school population of today, this all-inclusive solution aims to engender deeper critical thinking skills, improve motivation in the classroom, and broaden students’ scope of knowledge. The interactive nature of the classroom makes learning more fun for students, whilst fostering greater engagement with both the teacher and the lesson. This concept can be used for a variety of applications including distance learning.

All smart classrooms feature the integration of unique computing and assistive learning devices specially designed by Haier. Each teacher and student will receive a Haier laptop, which is connected to a wireless access point that serves as the classroom cloud. Through the wireless access point’s functionality and the classroom management software, the teacher can monitor students’ progress on assigned tasks and assist them in their learning process. Students will also be able to collaborate with each other on projects, writing assignments, debates and more using their laptops.

Additionally, teachers can project their lessons onto a Hi-Board, an interactive smart display with touch functionality and tempered glass-based backboard panels that support multiple writing tools such as regular chalk, dustless chalk and marker pens. This display device includes built-in aids and software for different shapes, characters and scientific formulas, making lecturing more efficient and convenient for the teacher. Plus, the lessons generated through the interactive whiteboard functionality of the Hi-Board will automatically be uploaded on the students’ laptops.

After class is over, students can store their laptops in a Haier charging trolley that charges these devices when not in use, whilst keeping them safe from electrical damage and theft.

Moreover, each laptop is outfitted with state-of-the-art parental controls, which provide teachers the assurance that their students will not be exposed to inappropriate or offensive content via webpages, malware, USB devices and CD’s.

“Abans Think Tank Conference” on 29th March 2018 at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo

ABANS PLC recently held the 1st annual “Abans Think Tank Conference” on 29th March 2018 at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo. The event represents Abans’ ongoing efforts to raise awareness of how smart classroom concepts can be seamlessly integrated into Sri Lanka’s education system, and enhance the students’ overall academic experience.

The illustrious occasion saw the gathering of distinguished invitees from different genres of Sri Lanka’s education and IT community. These included representatives from leading international, private and public schools as well as the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). Top executives from the Ministry of Education (MOE) were in attendance at the event as well.

Mr. Indika De Zoysa, Senior Consultant – ICTA, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the current global digital transformation and its positive implications for the Sri Lankan academic system. He emphasized the importance of transforming schools throughout the country into smart learning spaces with the incorporation of smart and multi-vision classroom concepts.

Mr. Frank Hung, Solutions Director – Haier International Smart Education, also addressed the gathering, providing an in-depth insight into how Haier’s unique smart classroom solutions can address the divergent needs, abilities and learning styles expressed by the school population of today.

Along with the revolutionary Haier Interactive Classroom which has already been launched in Sri Lanka, he introduced two ground-breaking classroom concepts namely, Immersive (VR) and Multi-Vision.

The Haier Immersive Classroom creates a virtual reality learning experience that enables students to grasp complex and abstract material. This is achieved by providing an immersive 360° environment using VR all-in-one headsets, which perfectly enhance and complement real-world exploration.

On the other hand, the Haier Multi-Vision Classroom presents an evolutionary solution for lecture capturing and sharing as well as distance learning. Students can easily access instructional videos via a Cloud portal provided by Haier, while teachers can automatically record, upload and share content in a hassle-free manner.

Further, a live demonstration of an interactive teaching distance class between Colombo and Suzhou City, China took place at the event, showcasing the benefits of a Haier Smart Classroom and how it can connect local students with valued experts and instructors from around the globe.

Abans has always taken an active stance towards enhancing the current academic standards in Sri Lanka, and ensuring that every child attains access to high-quality education. Besides conducting this unprecedented event, Abans has launched Haier Smart Classroom concepts at several public schools across Sri Lanka as part of a nationwide Abans-Haier CSR initiative. The Company’s flagship smart classroom project was officially opened on 2nd December 2017 at Vishaka Girls’ High School, Badulla, to great fanfare and critical acclaim. Two more smart classroom projects were also opened at Central College and Saranath College in Kuliyapitiya with the collaboration of the MOE.
